A Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition or a related concentration from a US Accredited College/University approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE).
Completed CADE accredited supervised practice program and successfully passed national examination for Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association.
License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in the state of Rhode Island (must have within 6 months of hire). Proof of application for license to be submitted upon employment.
An advanced degree and/or advanced credential such as Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), Certified Nutrition Support Clinical (CNSC) or Renal Specialty designated by the American Dietetic Association preferred.
Maintenance of American Dietetic Association Registration through completion of 75 hours of continuing education every five years and Rhode Island LDN of 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
Membership preferred in the American Dietetic Association and relevant practice groups such as the Medical Nutrition Practice Group (MNPG) and Renal Dietitians (RPG).
Thorough understanding of the application of principles of nutrition to human physiology and renal disease states. Thorough knowledge of the nutrition care process and the nutritional values of food and food groups. Ability to translate patient’s nutritional needs to recommendations for food preparation and meal planning.
The analytical ability to identify overt and potential nutritional problems.
The ability to communicate nutrition education through formal and informal channels.
Analytical and numerical skills to assess and calculate diets.
The administrative ability to direct and coordinate the delivery of quality nutrition care in this population group independently
Proficient computer skills in MS Word. MS PowerPoint and MS Excel preferred.
Minimum of one year as a Clinical Dietitian required, however two to three years of experience preferred. Previous renal dietetic experience preferred.
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Clinical Nutrition and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and departmental standards of practice, provides nutritional care to dialysis patients throughout their adult lifespan with consideration of the aging processes, cultural and emotional needs: interviews patients, caregivers and/or family members, reviews medical records to assess nutritional needs, develops nutritional plans and provides diet education to meet individualized needs. Maintains records of nutritional care plans and medical status of all patients. Monitors nutrition status and laboratory values and makes recommendations as needed. Documents patient nutritional plan and progress in the medical record. Provides teaching to medical and nutrition students and members of the interdisciplinary team. Participates in obtaining grants, conducts research and quality assurance programs.
