Knowledge normally obtained through completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in biology, biochemistry, cell biology or related scientific field.

Knowledge of instrumentation capabilities and ability to operate fluorescence-activated flow cytophotometer or similar system to perform flow cytophotometry studies.

Professional level of knowledge in biology, ell biology, biochemistry or related field to provide theoretical background in order to effectively understand and perform testing procedures. Analytical ability to evaluate integrity and quality of data.

Good administrative skills in order to direct operation of complex laboratory section, ensuring procedures are efficiently performed and quality control followed. A high degree of technical expertise of specific procedures, equipment, and controls in order to function as resource to subordinate employees.

Familiarity with instrumentation, analytical ability, mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity in order to perform routine maintenance functions and to identify and troubleshoot problems with instrumentation.

Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate with all levels of Hospital Staff, primarily research investigators, and various external sources to effectively provide and obtain information regarding procedures to be done and explanation of results.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of progressively more responsible laboratory work experience is required including one year of lead experience in a laboratory environment. Also six to twelve months previous experience performing flow cytophotometry studies is preferred or six to twelve months on the job training is required.


Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, operates fluorescence-activated flow cytophotometry system to perform cytophotometry studies on prepared specimens. According to needs of research investigators, sets up, calibrates and operates instrumentation. Performs routine maintenance and makes arrangements for major repairs. Identifies and troubleshoots problems affecting test results. Provides assistance to research investigators by explaining instrument capabilities and specimen preparation procedures to yield desired results. Provides basic interpretation of resulting data and graphics. Responsibilities for day-to-day operation of a laboratory section, may delegate certain operational responsibilities to other research staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, quality control, equipment troubleshooting, reviewing and signing out reports, ordering and maintaining supplies, gathering data and assisting in budget preparations and the like.
