Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences with 2 - 3 years progressively more responsible related experience.

Requires a working knowledge of statistics, computer programming and research methodology.

Requires an in-depth knowledge of the scientific field in which the research is being conducted.

EXPERIENCE:

Two to three years of experience in conducting surgery in small and large animals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Works in a laboratory environment with possible exposure to human and large animal serum, chemical reagents, animal subjects and radioactive materials. Hazards are minimized with adherence to established safety protocols.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently with the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory responsibility for up to 2 FTE’s.


Under supervision of Dr. Gideon Koren and following established policies and procedures, conducts experiments using in vivo/or in vitro techniques. Performs minor and major surgery on animals. Operates monitoring equipment; collects and analyzes data using statistical methodology. Reviews literature in the field for informational purposes or to gather data. Write progress reports and new animal protocols.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Calibrates and sets up equipment to be used in monitoring animal response and collecting data during the experiment. Performs minor and major surgery on large research animals such as rabbits, dogs and pigs including inserting monitoring catheters, ovariectomy, orchiectomy, hemodynamic studies, coronary angiography, and implantation of coils in coronary arteries. Assist in ablation of AV nodes in rabbit hearts.

Operates monitoring equipment to gather data such as the effect of various drugs on the cardiovascular system.

Participates in the interpretation of the results of experiences through conferences with supervisor and other researchers to review data compared to hypothesis and research methodology in instances of inexplicable data.

Reviews all literature pertaining to research being conducted in the scientific area of interest.

May assist in writing presentations and papers for publications based on research performed.
