Level of knowledge generally acquired through high school plus accredited course available through a hospital, technical school or community college. Phlebotomy Certificate preferred.


Those Phlebotomists that are required to travel to patients homes must have a valid driver’s license, registration and proof on insurance.


Must know and practice principles of aseptic techniques.


Knowledge of blood collector equipment, anticoagulants used, special precautions and interferences.


Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, infection control, specimen processing, medical terminology, anatomic terminology, first aid and safety.


Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture.


Customer Service and Communication skills to explain procedures and allay fears of patient and to perform other activities which require courtesy and tact.


Physical ability to distinguish chromatic colors.


Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


EXPERIENCE:

Six to nine months of previous phlebotomy experience to demonstrate venipuncture proficiency.


Under supervision of the Manager, Outreach Services, or guidance of the Senior Phlebotomist and/or Lead Phlebotomist perform responsibilities associated with customer service, patient registration, test ordering, obtaining blood and various other patient specimens and specimen processing according to established procedures. Performs related clerical support activities, maintain related records and reports and support patient service center operations.
