Can be either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant:

Nurse Practitioner:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse practitioner program with MS degree.
  • Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to practice in the expanded role.
  • License must include prescriptive privileges.
  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Clinical experience as a nurse practitioner for 2 years is preferred or a supervised clinical internship.
  • Must have patient care services, procedures and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician.


Physician Assistant:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program with B.S. Degree or its equivalent.
  • Certified or certification eligible by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Successful completion of supervised three month clinical internship or equivalent in clinically intensive atmosphere (hospital).


Can be either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant:

Under the supervision of the Attending, provides onsite clinical management of intermediate and critical care cardiac patients.

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is responsible for the development and evaluation of treatment plans for inpatients. Assists in the care and management of critical care patients to include, but not limited to: admission history and physical, ongoing assessment and intervention, and coordination of care for the cardiac population.

All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.

Duties May Include:

  • Obtains medical histories and performs and records physical examinations.
  • Records pertinent progress notes in the medical records and develops treatment plans.
  • In addition, the will initiate life-saving measures in emergency situations.
  • Initiates patient’s status and collaborates in the development of a plan of care with the patient and family, registered nurses, and the attending physician.
  • Provide educational and liaison supports to health care team members.
  • Participates in the education of patients, families, and caregivers regarding any procedures, post-procedural care, and expected outcomes and progress.
  • Interprets electrocardiograms and rhythm strips.
  • Initiates Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • May perform other duties as requested, by the attending physician within the PA/NP scope of practice.
  • Acts as a liaison between the attending physician or his/her delegate and the NP/PA Service.
  • Assists in clinical research projects, including data acquisition, entry and analysis as needed.
