Bachelor's Degree required. Level of knowledge of animal husbandry or related field normally acquired through Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Biology or related field.

Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science is highly desirable, as well as a Veterinary Technician license or certificate.

Professional level of knowledge in regards to animal health, behavior, anatomy and physiology to evaluate stature of animal against anticipated outcomes and to determine appropriate course of action.

Analytical ability to administer proper treatments and insure compliance with health program and approved protocols.

Interpersonal skills, leadership and organizational ability to effectively implement the animal health program and work effectively with CRF staff, principal investigators and animal research staff.

Supervisory and management skills to effectively ensure that procedures are efficiently performed by the subordinates.

Mathematical ability to use decimals and functions for dilutions and dosages of treatments, and for food and mixed solutions for special diets.

EXPERIENCE:

Three years progressively more responsible experience in an animal hospital or research setting required. Experience should demonstrate following:

Interpersonal skills and organizational ability to work effectively with principal investigators and animal research staff.

Analytical and mathematical ability to prepare and maintain records on surgical procedures and supplies.

Experience with computer based programs such as email, word processing, database applications and the internet.


Under general supervision of Manager of Central Research Facilities, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, assists researchers in performing major surgical procedures on animals for purpose of research and testing various treatment techniques. Schedules surgical procedures, orders and maintains inventory of supplies and drugs. Provides training to new employees. Provides pre-intra and post-operative care to animals and provides other animal care functions. Supervises activities of personnel assigned to surgical facility. Coordinates Veterinary Services activities in the animal care program, in conjunction with the CRF Director, Manager, Attending Veterinarian and Veterinary Services Coordinator.
