Master’s degree in Engineering, Health Care Administration, Business Administration or related field.


Ten or more years of progressively more responsible management experience in similarly large and complex organization (healthcare preferred). Experience should demonstrate highly effective management and leadership skills; ability to conceptualize, plan, facilitate and manage organization restructure to optimize effective operations in fiscally responsible manner.
Familiarity with current community health initiatives and emerging changes required.

This position reports to the President Rhode Island Hospital. The Vice President Facilities Services Rhode Island Hospital provides direction and leadership in attainment of the hospital’s mission and strategic objectives related to facilities management and services, security, food services, hospitality services and environmental services (housekeeping and central laundry), radiation safety, parking and property management. Develops and manages programs to ensure optimum quality of service delivery, consistent with fiscally sound practices and in consideration of the mission and values of the hospital and Lifespan system.

Participates with the President of Rhode Island Hospital (along with other system leaders) in development of the strategic operating plan, operating goals and objectives for areas of responsibility in accordance with established hospital and system strategic objectives. In collaboration with leaders, ensures strategic plans are developed and implemented to support quality and patient safety, in recognition of their highest priority status for Rhode Island Hospital and Lifespan.

Functions as the key executive leader regarding regulatory issues including, but not limited to, Joint Commission readiness, conditions of participation and environment of care. Responsible for the coordination of these activities across the Lifespan system.

Communicates organizational vision to internal and external customers and constituents. Ensures fiscal responsibility through optimization of economies of scale within hospital and system, actively pursuing opportunities for inter-institutional integration and cooperation where appropriate.

Manages and leads performance improvement activities, monitors quality assurance in support of integrated health care mission and key business initiatives of hospital and system. Provides executive leadership and overall management of assigned areas; approves new or modified policies and standards for areas of responsibility.

Ensures attainment of consistently high-quality patient care and safety and service delivery. Develops programs and services that are consistent with service delivery objectives and are carried out in effective, efficient and fiscally responsible manner.

Administers planning, organization, management, control and evaluation of delivery of quality services. Facilitates development of operational processes within institutions to assure success within managed care environment. Develops and implements policies and procedures consistent to provision and services, evaluating and ensuring compliance to same. Manages change to support customer satisfaction and service viability. Reviews, approves and manages financial, human material resources, including determining appropriate level of resources, securing funding and evaluating actual performance against goals and standards. Develops, manages and monitors operating and capital budgets.

Develops effective management organization and structure to provide ability to anticipate and manage change in accomplishing hospitals’ key business objectives and ensuring financial success. Recruits, selects, develops through coaching and mentoring and retains motivated and results-oriented management staff. Leads by example in encouraging personnel at all levels to identify and act collaboratively on opportunities in support of system’s mission, vision and values.

Provides for regular and ad hoc reports depicting operational, financial management and organizational status of each area of responsibility for senior executives.

Reviews operating results of areas of responsibility, compares them to established objectives and takes appropriate measures to ensure attainment.

Participates in quality activities that support the organization’s mission and philosophy; provides for high levels of customer service; ensures safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees and others; develops and implements quality and process improvement activities to meet or exceed established standards and goals.

Collaboratively develops and maintains constructive liaisons and working relationships with medical staff, hospital executives and managers, other publics and constituencies within community in furthering hospital’s academic mission and attainment of highest standards of health care and related community services.
