Assoc CMO- Designated Institutional Official - GME


The Associate CMO - Designated Institutional Official (DIO) will report to the SVP Medical Affairs/CMO. This individual will oversee the administration and oversight of Lifespan�s Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. Integrating GME effectively into the clinical learning environment at Rhode Island Hospital Lifespan affiliates and Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Rhode Island Hospital is a private not-for-profit acute care hospital as well as the state's only level I trauma center.  The Hospital is also designated as an academic medical center and the principal teaching hospital of the Warren Alpert Medical School .  Lifespan is a not-for-profit comprehensive integrated academic health system comprised of Rhode Island Hospital's pediatric division Hasbro Childrens Hospital The Miriam Hospital Newport Hospital Bradley Hospital Gateway Healthcare and Coastal Medical.




Facilitates and secures strategic linkages between hospitals and medical school to achieve patient care and educational outcomes and to address health care disparities and positively affect population health.

Serves as GME principal interface and advocate to hospital governance and medical school administration; represents GME at hospital and medical school educational operations.

Designs and implements operational structures and processes that optimally integrate GME and the clinical learning environment including engagement of trainees in quality and patient safety.

Provides support and oversight for program directors and core faculty as appropriate to roles and functions; participates in selection and mentoring of program directors with appropriate skills and competencies.

Facilitates alignment of program director roles and responsibilities within overall duties and departmental roles within the medical school functions as a program director advocate in medical school affairs.

Identifies or develops opportunities for joint UME/GME mentorship and career development for emerging GME leaders program directors educators and others; targets emerging leaders for succession to leadership roles.

Advocates for funding and resources for GME and GME programs that address strategic and operational goals of both hospital and medical school. In cooperation with the Program Directors and the GMEC prepare and obtain approval of annual operating and capital budgets for GME programs.

Oversees GME operations including but not limited to onboarding and orientation of trainees recruitment infrastructure resident supervision and evaluation staff supervision IT resource development annual award programs etc.

Establishes processes scorecards and metrics for reporting and monitoring operational performance that are acceptable to both hospital and medical school leadership.

Oversees program and institutional interfaces with accrediting organizations and other GME affiliate organizations (for example NRMP and ECFMG); informs medical school leadership if relevant issues. Review information and assure that all documents required by ACGME and other GME regulatory and accreditation agencies related are submitted in a complete accurate and timely manner.

Monitors emerging policy at local state and national levels with potential impact on GME; collaborates with medical school leadership to position the institution to optimize advantages or to mitigate negative impact.

Cultivates a culture of innovation; pursues opportunities for innovation across the UME-GME continuum including the development and execution of a strategic plan for GME at RIH Lifespan and Brown University.

Assesses supports and advances curricular development and best-in-class educational capabilities.

Develop and obtain Legal approval of a standard resident contract for trainees in all NCH GME programs. Sign contract for each trainee regardless of funding source.



Other information:


MD/DO physician license

GME experience required DIO experience preferred



RI State Medical License. Board Certified by ABMS.



10 or more years of experience as a program director/leader in a residency or fellowship training program. Possess and exercise clinical expertise.

Demonstrate a strong interest in the education of residents/fellows and administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating residents/fellow in each of the ACGME competency areas.



Supervises GME staff.

Provides supervision and oversight to Program Directors residents and fellows.
