Central Sterile Technician

Summary:
According to established procedures responsible for duties involving the sterilization and issuance of supplies and equipment for all areas of the hospital complex. Washes wraps dates and sterilizes supplies and equipment. Picks up washes and re-sterilizes all instruments packs equipment issued from the department. Receives requisition slips and telephone requests for supplies and equipment. Fills orders on cart and places in pick up area or delivers as required. Sets up various trays and packs and reprocesses shelf items according to hospital standards and operating procedure.

 

Responsibilities:
Picks up and delivers equipment from all areas of hospital complex.



Disassembles cleans and checks for proper functioning of equipment e.g. Gomco Suction Machines Internal Feeding Pumps Airflow Motors Intravenous Infusion Pumps Patient Controlled Analgesia Pumps etc.



Performs minor repairs on equipment replaces worn hoses and installs spare parts such as vacuum bottles or gauges as needed. Refers more complex problems e.g. motor malfunctions to BMED or manufacturer�s service representative.



Installs equipment such as side-rails trapeze assemblies and Stryker frames at beside as requested.



May provide some functional guidance to personnel operating equipment on units.



Stores certain equipment such as portable suction in such a manner that it is immediately available for use in emergencies.



Maintains and updates Equipment Tracking Database indicating location of equipment throughout hospital complex.



Operates gas and steam sterilizers following precise instructions including:

- Stamps each item with Julian date load and machine number. Determines expiration date of item and stamps as appropriate.

- Includes proper indicator(s) such as �Attest� (steam and gas) and �Load Card�.

- Checks gauges for proper reading and pushed carriage into sterilizer.

- Unloads carriage and separates items for aeration. Seals special gas packages.

- Cleans sterilizers with prepared solutions.

- May operate sterilizers manually when automatic functioning defaults.



Stocks shelves with clean and sterile supplies. Rotates stock according to expire date (Manufacturer or CSD as appropriate).



Installs gas tanks as necessary.



Washes and disinfects items such as bedpans syringes scissors and tubing with prepared antiseptic solutions and detergents.



Dries wraps bags and seals items.



Prepares sets of supplies and instruments according to strict instructions.



Fills requisitions for supplies from stock and loads onto supply carts.



Restocks shelves in order room with supplies from stock room.



Cleans and disinfects work area daily.



Answers department telephone and handles simple requests. May deliver items to units in an emergency.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

High School diploma required.



Certified Registered Central Services Technician status preferred.



Ability to read instruction manuals and follow directions for cleaning and checking equipment.



Mechanical ability to make minor repairs on equipment and to recognize problems that are more complex.



Numerical and clerical ability to check gauges read charts and prepare simple records.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



EXPERIENCE:

Three to six months on the job training to learn to recognize the various kinds of equipment and their functioning as well as the sterilization requirements of various instruments equipment and medical/surgical supplies.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continuous walking and standing lifting pushing and pulling with some heat discomfort.



Physical ability to lift and transport occasionally heavy equipment and to push heavy carriages loaded with medical/surgical supplies.



Exposure to contaminated items strong detergents and antiseptic solutions and ethylene oxide gas.
