Dietetic Technician

Under the general supervision of the Senior Pediatric Dietitian screens medical records of the pediatric patients for pertinent nutrition and medical histories and records patient�s food intake after completing nutrient analysis. Visits patient�s family members to obtain diet related information answer questions about diet prescriptions and give diet counseling on basic dietary restrictions. Assists patients and family members with difficult therapeutic diets. May coordinate delervy and pick up of patient meal trays and assist in up dating menus. Corrects all patient menus as required according to the therapeutic diet order and updates cardexes with pertinent information as needed.

Screens patient medical records for pertinent nutrition and medical history lab values and medications for review by the Pediatric Clinical Dietitian.

Meets with patients and family members to discuss problems associated with patient�s diet. Instructs patients and family members on basic diet modifications under the general supervision of the clinical Dietitian; documents same in medical record. Assists patient in meal selection if needed in accordance with prescribed diet; recommends changes as appropriate.

Visits patients in order to review their progress and discuss their nutritional care plan; conducts a continual nutritional assessment and evaluation of the patient and revises plan as patients condition warrants. Monitors all patients� intakes as appropriate; charts such data in the patient�s medical record as necessary. Reviews patient meal selections for nutritional adequacy. Interacts with patient�s care staff to achieve the goal of meeting patients� nutritional requirements.

Orients Nutrition Hospitality Associates to job routines as needed: coordinates daily activities of same. Provides input into evaluations takes necessary corrective disciplinary action as appropriate. Coordinates the timely processing of menus to patients ensuring menus are circulated and retrieved according to schedule as possible and that necessary corrections are made to provide for proper meal preparation and delivery.

A thorough understanding of the application of principles of nutrition to human physiology and pediatric disease states. A thorough knowledge of the nutritional values of food and food groups. An understanding of nutritional requirements and developmental stages from infancy through adolescence. 
The analytical ability to identify overt and potential nutritional problems. The ability to develop nutritional care plans for review by the Clinical Dietitian. Ability to identify potential systems problems impacting on the pediatric food service. Oral and written communication skills necessary to deal effectively with patients families and hospital personnel in communicating dietetic care plans etc. Supervisory skills to effectively coordinate and evaluate activities of subordinate work group. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the adult lifespan with the consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural pattern in each step of the care process. Demonstrated ability to use Cook Chill carts and equipment correctly (taught on the job).  

Associates Degree in Dietetic Technology or Bachelor�s Degree in Food and Nutrition or equivalent preparatory program.

Review of selected literature on pediatric nutrition and developmental stages.

Other information:
Prior experience in a nursing home or hospital is desirable. 

Some exposure to communicable diseases when in contact with patients but hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.
