Dir Clinical Social Work

Reports to the Executive Vice President Nursing Affairs - Lifespan.  Plans organizes and manages overall operations of clinical social work and chaplaincy services for Rhode Island Hospital The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital.  Formulates overall goals and objectives for clinical social work and other areas of responsibilities for specific facilities recommends to administration and chiefs of service plans for current and future programs in accordance with current professional standards.



Develops and recommends short and long-term goals for social work and chaplaincy services in consideration of Lifespan�s mission values and key business objectives.  Provides sponsorship to the function by identifying resources required to achieve the operating results and advocates for them during resource allocation. 

Directs the effective utilization of resources including people financial and material by developing goals and objectives for areas of responsibility in collaboration with immediate supervisor.  Develops and implements business plans in accordance with action planning to attain key operating objectives. 

Implements management standards for area operations ensuring the effective recruitment selection development and evaluation of managerial professional and support staff to optimize the achievement of goals and objectives.

Conducts ongoing evaluation of clinical social work model and plans designs develops implements evaluates and modifies customer-focused coordinated delivery of clinical social work services. Develops and maintains strong collaborative relationship with the Director of Care Management in coordinating complex discharge planning.  Collaborates and consults with peers and colleagues in ensuring patient needs are met. 


Effectively and continually communicates with staff management and customers to facilitate the flow of information necessary to the success of the employees departments programs and the organization.  Creates employee ownership for their careers and success by providing staff with positive and actionable feedback to maximize the utilization and potential of the organization�s human resources.

Promotes effective planning and coordination of services with physicians other departments and outside agencies.  Ensures all patient care activities operate to support established clinical standards of care meet or exceed patient care quality standards and customers� needs comply with standards of various accreditation and regulatory agencies and consider the age-specific needs of the patient populations served.  Ensures effective customer relations.

Interprets and implements the Clinical Social Work Services philosophy policy and practice for the hospitals.  Develops implements and evaluates programs and services that provide for continuous quality improvement.  Provides for systems to assess patient family and community needs for services and programs. 

Develops recommends implements and administers the necessary policies and procedures and provides the overall direction necessary to ensure high standards of care in all areas of clinical social work services ensuring smooth interfaces and delivery of services to all patients and staffs.

Ensures that all Joint Commission (TJC) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards codes and regulations are adhered to and that all appropriate licenses permits and certificates are obtained and maintained. 

Participates in professional activities and maintains professional affiliations to keep abreast of trends in the industry as well as changes in regulations and legislation related to the field.

Participates in or leads various committees task forces and quality improvement teams as needed for specific areas of responsibilities.

Performs other related duties as required.

Other information:


Master�s degree in Social Work from an accredited graduate school of social work and certification as independent social worker (CISW).  Current license to practice clinical social work in Rhode Island (LICSW).


Minimum of three years of progressively more responsible management experience in related field.  In addition a minimum of three years working in a medium- to large-sized academic medical center is highly desirable.


Supervises up to approximately 70 full-time equivalent employees directly and indirectly.  Provides supervision to the Director of Chaplaincy Services.
