ED Patient Care Tech II

Reports to the Clinical Manager and works under the general direction and supervision of the professional staff. Coordinates assists activities and provides support to the providers and registered nurses in delivering clerical and patient care


Shifts focus quickly to support patients and/or co-workers as needs arise. Adjusts own practices in light of broader system needs and requirements. Changes approach “midstream” when something is not working. Responds in a flexible and cordial manner to different demands from various caregivers. Manages multiple tasks and changes rapidly one task to another when necessary.

Continuously learns about topics related to the position (i.e. reads latest information attends classes observes procedures and asks questions). Seeks out challenging opportunities to advance personal learning. Provides feedback to fellow staff members for improvement of job-related tasks. Provides suggestions to improve department efficiencies.

Anticipates and acts on the needs of patients and co-workers. Modifies communication style to effectively address the feelings and concerns of patients and co-workers. Transfers unique patient knowledge from on encounter to another. Listens carefully to others to understand their needs and concerns. Informs patients using pre-printed instructions for routine procedures simple diagnostic test results and/or treatment.

Schedules patient appointments and follow-up tests taking into consideration medical concerns and patient circumstances as desires. Anticipates equipment and supply utilization well enough to maintain sufficient inventory PAR levels. Utilizes computer skills to meet department needs. Handles difficult patient situations in a way that takes into consideration longer-term patient relationships. Directs or escorts patients to scheduled assigned physicians to balance the flow of the department and to decrease wait time for patients.

Reviews and verifies with patient accuracy and completion of self-admission history. Effectively prepares charts rooms and patients for physicians and nurses. Provides precise technical skills in performing the following tasks: EKG’s pulse oximetry phlebotomy minor non-sterile dressings finger sticks etc. Provides assistance to physicians and nurses on the following procedures: set up for suture placement/removal large or complicated dressing changes line placement endoscopic procedures bone marrow Lumbar Puncture biopsies NG tube insertion etc. Assists in positioning/holding patients for invasive procedures such as Lumbar Puncture and Bone Marrow. Refers to registered nurse or physician all patients with medical issues and handles/refers non-medical needs. Tracks laboratory or diagnostic results and forwards normal/abnormal results to be reviewed and followed up by the ED providers.

Performs foley catheter insertion IV establishment (INT only) and dressings requiring sterile technique. (1)

Adjusts own workload to support co-workers in meeting patient needs. Listens for key information in order to prioritize level of importance of task. Works efficiently during down times to keep work flowing. Manages time by preparing and organizing in advance. Utilizes sound judgement to recognize level of urgency and responds appropriately.

Follows a logical line of questioning to understand who best meets the patients’ needs. Handles potentially critical situations with speed and sensitivity. Anticipates questions/problems and prepares appropriate response. Collects all medical data in order to facilitate the physician’s ability to draw conclusions about the patient’s needs.

Sees problems through to conclusion even in stressful unpleasant patient interactions. Informs physician or other appropriate caregiver immediately of any error. Follows-up on referrals to ensure high-level of patient care. Anticipates problems and informs physician in advance. Confronts problems directly by dealing with patients and co-workers face-to-face.

Resolves emotionally disruptive situations and seeks assistance from co-workers when necessary. Manages one’s emotions and the potential effects on co-workers and patients. Deals calmly and politely with patients and co-workers under stress. Preserves the reputation of the team in the face of conflict with others. Negotiates necessary interdepartmental patient information and services to ensure proper patient care.

These duties may only be performed by PCT IIs who are otherwise qualified as currently licensed LPNs or nursing students as defined in credential D of the Educational Requirements outlined below.


Other information:

High School Diploma or equivalency – able to read write and speak English.

Basic Life Support Certification.

Educational Requirements: Must possess ONE or more of the following credentials:

- Graduate of a Medical Assistant training program (9 months or longer; curriculum must include sterile conscience/asepsis).

- Licensed Practical Nurse.

- Medical student (actively enrolled in an accredited school).

- Nursing student (actively enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program AND have successfully completed two Medical/Surgical clinical rotations.

- Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician –Paramedic level (EMT-P).

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


Successful mastery of the knowledge and skills outlined in the ED Patient Care Technician I job description.

One year experience preferred.

Demonstrated understanding of personal computers.


Patient care environment with exposure to communicable diseases.

Hazards minimized by adherence to established safety procedures.
