Infection Preventionist

Summary:
The Infection Prevention Coordinator reports to the VP Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer. Under general direction plans organizes develops directs implements and evaluates infection prevention and control activities at Bradley Hospital/Gateway Healthcare for patients visitors and staff.

 

Responsibilities:
Facilitates the effective utilization of resources including people financial and material through the development of goals and objectives for the Infection Control and Prevention program.



Conducts regular rounds in all areas of responsibility for discussing monitoring and following the practices of infection control with a variety of employees. Collects data on infections from across all departments and maintaining records for every case.



Presents in-service education programs for staff on infection prevention and control. Responds to questions by personnel on nursing unit and other programs and conducts informal in-service education as needed.



Conducts continuous surveillance for detecting the infection source for the purpose of prevention. Observes and monitors use of barrier techniques (Standard Precautions) as directed. Provides guidance to staff regarding appropriate procedures for specific situations referencing the Infection Control Manual as needed. Ensures the availability or supplies and place needed for potential of isolation.



Follows up and investigates the incidents of patient client infections generating reports and reports them to VP/CNO and CMO. Reports communicable diseases to the Department of Health. Prepares nosocomial infection reports. Revises established and updated related Infection Control policies and procedures manuals.



Implements educational programs for the provision of skills and knowledge regarding infection preventive measures and control practices to ensure a safe environment or surroundings to patients visitors and staff.



Monitors the execution of preventive measures and provides guidance to staff.



Participates in staff meetings in-service education programs and quality improvement initiatives as assigned.



Leads infection control committee meetings and organizes their content. Prepares monthly statistical information for presentations in infection control meetings.



Assures that all documentation required to meet regulatory standards is up to date organized and available.



Reports infection outbreaks directly to the VP/CNO and the CMO. Reports any interference for the implementation of infection control practices.



Refers employees to EOHS for follow-up regarding potential infectious processes so that the staff is free from any infectious disease.



Participates in councils quality improvement teams and other such committees as required.



Member of Nursing Leadership Committee.



Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Registered Nurse with 8-10 years of clinical experience. Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) required.



Graduate of recognized nursing program advanced degrees and CIC strongly preferred.



Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to psychiatric patients with consideration of human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience in a similar role strongly preferred. Highly energetic individual to develop teaching materials and training programs. Able to plan and obtain objectives to ensure the development of service. Knowledge of techniques for data collection. Able to conduct trianing seminars and exercises. Knowledge of nursing practice and theory. Good analysis and statistical collation skills. Able to lead staff and influence them. Able to work alone and as part of a team. Good written interpersonal time management and presentation skills. Flexibility to meet a wide range of service needs.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physician's offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and personal protective equipment.
