Interventional Rad Tech-PD

Summary:
Under general supervision of Lead Technologist and the section�s Medical Director following established policies and procedures and in conjunction with other technical health care personnel assists physicians in the conduct of specialized angiographic examinations of designated parts of the circulatory system. Operates high speed serial radiography and cinegraphy equipment which exposes film while high pressure injector is delivering the contrast media into the blood vessels from a catheter positioned by the physician.
 

Responsibilities:
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition using aseptic cleaning techniques where necessary. Ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied equipped and operational before each examination. May assist in setting up sterile supply trays required by physician.
Positions and instructs patient regarding the procedure to obtain and effect the desired results and to allay patient fears.
Calculates and selects proper technical factors such as voltage current exposure time and focal distance to ensure diagnostically acceptable radiographs.
Injects contrast media by means of a power injector which automatically applies a constant rate of pressure as ordered by the physician.
Operates specialized and complex radiographic equipment such as special x-ray tubes for biplane filming and cinegraphic equipment while simultaneously injecting contrast media.
Operates rapid film changes and other equipment necessary to obtain serial radiographs at a rate corresponding to the injection rate as ordered by the physician.
Processes and develops x-ray films and x-ray movies using automatic film developing equipment.
Records and completes records pertinent to procedures performed.
Assists in monitoring the physiologic status of the patient during tests and procedures informs physician and / or nursing staff of pertinent changes in condition.
Understands and practices ALARA principles of radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.
 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Two years of formal training in an approved School of radiological technology plus registration through the American Registry for radiologic Technologists.
Current/valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island.
Must take advanced registry test in Cardiovascular/Interventional Technology given by the American Registry of radiologic Technologists within two (2) years of placement in Vascular/Interventional section of Diagnostic Imaging.
Must have the interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with the following groups:
- Patients in order to allay their fears and anxieties.
- Physicians and other staff members in a team working relationship.
- Other hospital employees and outsiders to exchange information.
Must have the analytical ability to calculate and select the proper technical factors to provide acceptable radiographs and to simultaneously operate a variety of equipment.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:
Requires between three to six months experience on the job training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Exposure to blood and various bodily fluids but there is little chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed.
Works in an area where there is little discomfort due to noise dust or heat.
Exposed to radiation but hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.
Some exposure to chemical odor when processing film.
Must have the physical dexterity and strength to position the patient and operate equipment.
