Laboratory Assistant

SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Pathologist�s Assistant and following standard operating procedures (SOP) provides assistance to Pathologists Pathology Residents Pathologists� Assistant in the performance of autopsies and the examination of surgical specimens by providing specified technical assistance by maintaining the operational capacity of the Surgical Pathology Cutting Room and Autopsy suite and by performing other related duties as specified or requested.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the Pathologists Pathology Residents and Pathologists� Assistants in the technical aspects of the complete autopsy.Sets up the workstations daily and as necessary for the examination of surgical pathology and autopsy specimens.Retrieves receives and accessions surgical pathology specimens following standard operating procedures with attention to the demographic information on requisition slip and specimen label. Resolves discrepancies according to policy and procedure.Prepares specified tissue types (tissues without Pathology) including properly fixing cutting sectioning and cassetting specimens.Releases bodies to authorized personnel in adherence to policy and procedure.Prepares specimens for shipping to outside institutions according to established protocol.Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the Surgical Pathology Cutting Room and the Autopsy Suite using standard operating procedures relating to the proper disposal of hazardous and infectious material.Maintains inventory control for the supplies and reagents necessary for procedures performed in the Surgical Pathology Cutting Room and Autopsy Suite.Receives and consolidates volatile solutions and toxic chemicals in the Volatile Solution Room and maintains its inventory orderliness and cleanliness to comply with regulatory requirements.Performs all duties in a timely manner.Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives.Coordinates the training of new Laboratory Assistants/Dieners.Performs other related duties as required. 


BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Level of knowledge generally obtained from completing a high school education.


EXPERIENCE:

One year�s experience performing similar duties successfully in another institution or one year on-the-job training under supervision at The Miriam Hospital.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in the laboratory where there is some exposure to unpleasant odors infectious materials toxins and other hazardous material. Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions and procedures. Sits stands and walks intermittently throughout the day. Physical ability needed to lift and carry laboratory equipment and materials.
