Nursing Assistant

Perform direct and indirect nursing care services under the direction of a Registered Nurse to meet the biopsychosocial and environmental needs of patients and families and to promote the recovery of patients in a variety of departments.


Patient Care Activities:

Provides nursing care under the direction of the Registered Nurse:

- Assists in the admission process by greeting and orienting patient and families to hospital.

- Identifies patient per hospital policy

- Obtains vital signs height and weight on admission.

- Reports significant observations to the Registered Nurse.

- Observes patient's needs and follows through appropriately.

Considers age specific needs according to scope of services when providing care.

- Neonate

- Child

- Adolescent

- Adult

- Geriatric

- Reinforces basic health/hygiene mobility and patient teaching.


- Demonstrates understanding of the medical record and on-line documentation policies

- Documents in a timely legible manner

- Maintains competence of use in current computer systems

Technical Skills:

Performs the following technical skills within the assigned level of responsibility of the NA according to policy and procedure with consideration of age-specific needs:

- Activities of Daily Living

- Ambulating Patients

Assists with:

- Pap Smear

- Physical Exam

- Preoperative Preparation

Bathing Patient

Post Mortem Care


- Fleet


Feeding Patient

Nonsterile Dressings

Hospital approved hot and cold packs

Perineal Care

Sitz Baths

Transferring Patients

- Wheelchair/Beds/Stretchers

- Discharge

Vital Signs


- BP

- Pulse Oximetry

- Patient self-report of pain.

Collects the following specimens as per policy.

Demonstrates ability to utilize the following equipment:

- Crash cart- Adult/Pediatric

- Oximeter

- Bed Scale/Scale

- Foot Cradle

- Drainage Bags as per policy

- No Lift Equipment

- Alternating Pressure Pad Therapeutic Mattress and Low Air Loss Mattress Overlay

- EKG if applicable

- Electronic vital signs equipment

- Wheelchair

- Stretcher

- Sequential Pneumatic Compression Device Pumps

- Blood Glucose Monitor

- Bariatric Equipment

- Demonstrates use of Restraints as per policy.

Demonstrates the responsibilities of the certified nursing assistant in patient safety initiatives e.g. falls prevention.

Completes annual competencies.


Other information:

Nursing Assistant Registration by the State of Rhode Island and current CPR certification.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit 7-8 hours per day stand squat/kneel 1-3 hours per day walk 3-7 hours per day lift over 50 lbs with good mechanics twist/bend infrequently. Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work that deviates from neutral position and be able to perform fine motor skills. Must be able to have accurate near and far vision of 20/40 moderate depth perception and discriminate among red green and white. Must be able to hear a whisper at 8 feet.
