Patient Svcs Secretary B

Summary:
Under general supervision but according to established policies and procedures is responsible for receiving and processing patients and their records through a clinic/treatment area. Ensures an orderly patient flow that patient�s record is available and complete prior to visit/treatment that data is recorded and patient is correctly billed for services and that patient is properly instructed in preparation for next visit/treatment when necessary.

 

Responsibilities:
Receives patient into the clinic/treatment area and as necessary interviews patient in order to obtain pertinent insurance biographical and medical information. Assists patient and/or their representative in completing registration and other forms.



Ensures that patient�s file is complete prior to treatment/clinic visit including appropriate records lab test results and x-rays. Evaluates file prior to scheduled visit and follow up with other Hospital departments to obtain missing data.



When necessary contact agencies outside the Hospital to obtain pertinent patient information and to coordinate clinic/treatment programs.



Provides patient with proper forms for tests to be taken prior to next appointment and gives instructions regarding any special preparation necessary prior to test or appointment.



Completes necessary billing forms and calculates charges for clinic/treatment services rendered. Records appropriate data into patient record including tests ordered medical summaries etc.



Acts as clinic/treatment area receptionist answering the telephone greeting and giving directions to patient and visitors taking and relaying messages and giving out information about the clinic/treatment area services policies and procedures. Refers technical inquiries to appropriate personnel.



Schedules clinic/treatment appointments often using on-line computer terminal.



Coordinates and maintains clinic/treatment area records files and statistics. Prepares recurring and special operational reports and summaries.



May evaluate patient�s financial status and according to established criteria may determine eligibility for discounted charges.



Operates typewriter in order to complete forms type summaries into records etc. Operates on-line computer terminal similar in operation to a typewriter in order to access and update computer files.



Performs other duties including observing patients in waiting area for signs of distress transporting or accompanying patients to other destinations within Hospital when necessary delivering or picking up records and assisting medical/professional personnel as assigned.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

The interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with patients and their representatives who may be confused and/or apprehensive in order to obtain information explain clinic/treatment area policies and procedures etc. and with other personnel to exchange information.



The ability to operate an on-line computer terminal and to complete miscellaneous typing assignments. The level of typing skill required is not that of a correspondence typist.



The organizational skills to maintain and assemble various materials on numerous patients and to assure orderly patient flow.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



A high school level of knowledge in order to deal effectively with people and to maintain related records.



EXPERIENCE:

Requires at least six months related experience in a health care setting.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some exposure to patients with illnesses or injuries.
