Summary:
Under the general supervision of Pediatric Behavioral Health Nursing
Leadership the Pediatric Behavioral Interventionist is responsible for the
safety and implementation of therapeutic intervention and programming of the
assigned patient(s). Works with other members of the multidisciplinary team
through an integrative care approach develops a daily schedule implements
behavior plans and establishes a therapeutic environment for those in their
care. In accordance with various state and federal regulatory requirements the
Pediatric Behavioral Interventionist is also responsible for implementation
observation and documentation of this program the care provided under the
direction of the multidisciplinary team.
Responsibilities:
Participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment:
Develops a clear understanding of trauma and displays an empathetic
compassionate non-judgmental attitude toward the patients and families in our
care.
Always maintains safety through close observation of the patient.
Demonstrates appropriate critical incident follow-up skills through
timely verbal reporting to the Registered Nurse and documentation in the
medical record.
Completes other documentation applicable to the event including safety
event reporting system.
Handles crisis situations in a safe effective manner which is
consistent with Lifespan's policies and procedures.
Demonstrates ability to set consistent and supportive therapeutic limits
within guidelines and standards of the unit hospital department and
corporation
Actively engages with assigned child(ren) throughout the shift.
Manages aggressive/destructive behavior by providing timely therapeutic
interventions.
Assists in placing patients in seclusion and/or restraints according to
policy and procedures.
Assists in patient belongings and room searches as assigned.
Participates in the development of therapeutic behavior plans:
Demonstrates analytical skills and an understanding of psychiatric
illnesses and developmental disorders to provide an integrative approach to
care by acting as a liaison between clinical teams.
Through therapeutic rapport creates participates and organizes
therapeutic and recreational activities to meet the psychosocial and
developmental needs of patients in their care.
Supports and contributes to the development of behavioral treatment
plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary integrative care team.
Communicates individual patient plans in an ongoing manner to the
members of the multidisciplinary treatment team throughout the day to modify
these plans as clinically necessary.
Demonstrates and consistently models interpersonal and communication
skills to effectively interact with patient/families as well as other members
of the multidisciplinary team.
Adheres to corporate hospital departmental and unit policies and
procedures:
Maintains current CPR certification.
Maintains current certification in crisis management.
Attends peer review supervision and staff meetings as assigned.
Consistently follows all program-based policies and procedures.
Attends staff development as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Other information:
EDUCATION:
Baccalaureate in Psychology or related Human Service field Preferred
EXPERIENCE:
Six months to one year of direct childcare work with emotionally
impaired youth Preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated
with caring for patients with behavioral and emotional disorders.
May be required to assist with high acuity situations including but
not limited to physical restraint of
patients.
May be required to provide support during patient transport and
transition between hospital units and its affiliates.
Independent Action:
Responds to individual patient-care situations demonstrating knowledge
skills and attitudes acquired through education certification and work
experience.
Performs independently within program policies and practices.
Refers specific complex problems to supervising nurse where
clarification of program policies and procedures may be required.
