Physical Therapist

SUMMARY:
The Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Manager and working under the guidance of the Clinical Manager or designee completes comprehensive examinations to determine body structure and function level impairments activity limitation and participation restrictions. Establishes diagnosis prognosis and develops an individualized plan of care. Implements treatment interventions and performs on-going evaluations through-out episode of care.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs examinations and evaluations of patients. Establishes diagnosis prognosis and an individualized plan of care. Implements treatment intervention based on the plan of care observing precautions indications and contradictions for all treatment procedures. Regularly evaluates patient�s progress and revises goals and plan of care accordingly. Clinical approach emphasizes patient/caregiver education that includes thorough and effective discharge planning.
Completes timely and accurate clinical documentation and charges in full compliance with hospital professional and regulatory standards that clearly demonstrate eligibility/medical necessity of services.
Measures outcomes of treatment and conducts continuous evaluation of effectiveness of practices and programs to improve and maintain quality of services. Engages in program specific quality improvement initiatives striving for professional excellence. Maintains documentation of performance quality improvement practices and programs.
Communicates clearly respectfully and honestly with patients and/or caregivers and colleagues. 
Directs care and coordinates patient�s plan of care while providing physical therapy consultation to physicians rehabilitation personnel and other professionals. Proactively provides written and verbal communication with physicians nurses case managers and other personnel involved in the patient�s care. 
Works collaboratively within the academic medical center and more broadly with community based healthcare providers.
Provides training/instruction to appropriate members of the department related to clinical area of focus or interest. Provides education to other hospital departments/personnel students and outside agencies/schools.
Demonstrates ability to flex schedule based on program and/or patient family caregiver need. Determines priorities according to patient care needs.
Participates in community based professional events. Enhances professional expertise through ongoing appropriate educational activities.
Participates in weekend and holiday rotation per program requirements. Practices in a manner that supports and promotes teamwork.
Demonstrates behavior which follows the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Code of Ethics in all aspects of clinical work and staff relationships.
Completes mandatory departmental and hospital training as assigned by Clinical Manager.


BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelor�s degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited college or university is required.
A Master�s of Science or Doctor of Physical Therapy is preferred.
Must be a licensed Physical Therapist in the State of Rhode Island.
Membership and involvement in discipline specific professional organization and/or other clinically relevant organization is strongly encouraged.
Independently sets goals for professional development.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and sensitivity to cultural diversity in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

New graduates will be considered.
Clinical experience in program-specific settings is preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Pursuant to the state of Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for Licensing Physical Therapists a licensed physical therapist shall at all times be responsible for the supervision of physical therapist assistants supportive personnel and students to ensure the safety and welfare of patients.
Communicates routinely with physical therapy assistants to monitor patient progress/status reassess needs and make changes to treatment plans.
Must be fit for duty in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) standards and program specific needs.
Work requires walking and long periods of standing and the ability to bend twist bend grasp and demonstrate physical mobility designed for patients care plan.
