Psych CNS Prescriptive Priv

Summary:
Reports to the Medical Director of Adult Consultation Psychiatry for clinical practice and to the Administrative Director for the Center for Practice Excellence for role and activities in education and nursing research for the Department of Nursing. Facilitates a quality hospital experience and outcome for patients through timely action and proper use of resources. Oversees the progress of a specific caseload of patients across the care continuum including performance of psychiatric assessments patient examinations review of relevant medical records and collection of historical data from family and healthcare providers. Liaises with house staff and nursing staff regarding clinical status and treatment recommendations. Provides appropriate education consultation and resources for psychiatric patients across the care continuum.
 
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates a fundamental grounding in nursing theory and practice with mastery of knowledge in advanced psychiatric nursing practice.
Demonstrates advanced psychiatric assessment skills and knowledge of family dynamics.
Provides psychiatric consultation including triage of incoming consultation requisitions psychiatric assessments provision of supportive psychotherapy and planning for inpatient partial hospitalization and outpatient psychiatric services to patients in acute care ambulatory care and home care settings.
Performs advanced practice skills under the supervision of the Medical Director.
Manages a caseload of patients in partnership with the healthcare team to optimize health status and coordinate care over time and across healthcare settings.
Provides leadership in the development validation implementation and evaluation of standards policies procedures and critical paths to support the patient care delivery model.
Oversees care coordination in acute home care and ambulatory care settings as feasible.
Assists the healthcare team to achieve mutually agreed upon healthcare goals by providing necessary support education and encouragement.
Provides expert consultation for clinical issues promoting increased knowledge and skills for the consultee.
Participates in the education clinical research and mentoring of healthcare providers.
Facilitates patient/family education in area of expertise.
Annually completes mandatory safety infection control and BLS.
Independently prescribes medication for psychiatric patients per licensure.
 
Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Masters of Science Degree.
Graduate of accredited program in psychiatric nursing.
Specialty certification required with prescriptive privileges.
Baccalaureate in Nursing.
Must have current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or in another state that participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


EXPERIENCE:

Five years related experience as RN in acute care hospital setting required.
Two years experience as a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist with prescriptive privileges preferred.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in interactions with patients families staff and other professionals.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.

None.
