Psychiatric Technician

Performs direct and indirect nursing care services under the direction of a Registered Nurse to meet the biophysical psychosocial and environmental needs of patients and to promote the recovery of patients. Provides psychiatric intervention and appropriate medical attention for patients requiring care in voluntary and involuntary situations under the direction of the Registered Nurse to promote the recovery of patients.


Patient Care Activities

Provides nursing care under the direction of the Registered Nurse :

- Assists in the admission process by greeting and orienting patient to hospital. Obtains vital signs height and weight on admission.

- Completes appropriate sections according to policy and procedure of the Patient History and Assessment Form

- Reports significant observations to the Registered Nurse.

- Observes patient�s needs and follows through appropriately.

- Considers age specific needs according to scope of services when planning implementing evaluating care.

- Adult

- Geriatric

Reinforces basic health/hygiene mobilizing patient teaching.

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse provides psychiatric interventions for patients.

Assists with self-destructive psychotic patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

- Collaborates with the RN to establish priorities in patient care.

- Evaluates patient�s response to the plan of care on a continuous basis.

- Assists and participates in patient group activities under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

Assists with teaching the adult and geriatric patient.


- Demonstrates understanding of the Documentation Policy and Procedure.

- Documents on the flow sheet graphic sheet and Patient History and Assessment according to policy and procedure.

- Documents in a legible pertinent and concise manner.

- Documents safety levels on the flow sheet.

Technical Skills:

Performs the following technical skills within the assigned level of responsibility of the NA according to policy and procedure with consideration of age-specific needs:

- Activities of Daily Living

- Bathing Patient

- Discharge of Patient (when applicable)

- Feeding Patient

- Ice Packs

- Non-sterile Dressings

- Perineal Care (when applicable)

- Separate Urine Bottles (when applicable)

- Sitz Baths (when applicable)

- Transferring Patients to Wheelchair/Beds/Stretchers

- Vital Signs


- BP

- Pulse Oximetry

- Patient self-report of pain.

Demonstrates ability to collect the following specimens:

- Urine - Urine for C&S

- Stool

- Sputum

- 24 hour collections

Demonstrates ability to utilize the following equipment:

- Crash cart

- Oximeter

- Scale

- Drainage Bags

- Hydraulic Lift

- Electronic vital signs equipment

- Wheelchair

- Stretcher

Demonstrates use of Restraints and Seclusion as per policy.

Maintains annual department-specific competency in managing assaultive behavior seclusion and restraint guidelines guidelines for suicide risk and precautions adult behavioral emergencies and the psychiatric elderly patient.

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse:

- Protects disorganized self-destructive or psychotic patients by functioning on a one-to-one basis

- Assists with out-of-control patients using physical restraints or seclusion room

- Performs all the duties contained in this MHA position when assigned to other departments.


- Participates in group activities.

- Participates in multidisciplinary unit meetings.

- Interacts with disorganized patients providing orientation and reality testing.


Other information:

Requires a knowledge of basic anatomy physiology and basic nursing care functions.

Successful completion of a certified Nursing Assistant Program and Nursing Assistant Registration by the State of Rhode Island and current CPR certification.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit 7-8 hours per day stand squat/kneel 1-3 hours per day walk 3-7 hours per day lift over 50 lbs with good body mechanics twist/ben infrequently.

Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work that deviates from neutral position and be able to perform fine motor skills.

Must be able to have accurate near and far vision of 20/40 moderate depth perception and discriminate among red green and white.

Must be able to hear a whisper at 8 feet.
