Registered Nurse

Summary:

The Complementary Therapy Registered Nurse will provide complementary therapies to patients at The Miriam Hospital with the goal of improving their quality of life with the goal of reducing pain anxiety fatigue and nausea.

 

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide complementary therapies to patients admitted in the hospital to assist with symptom management to facilitate healing.

Provide staff support using various integrative healing modalities.

Demonstrate a sound understanding of complementary therapies in relation to the patient�s health condition and goals of therapy and how they support employee health and wellbeing.

Provide a patient centered integrated approach in the assessment delivery and evaluation of therapies to patients in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Provide feedback of the patient�s condition to the appropriate member of the team.

Maintain professional records of treatments in patient�s electronic medical record.

Assessment and documentation prior to and post complementary treatment in integrative therapy flowsheet.

Maintain HIPAA compliance to ensure patient confidentiality.

Education Professional Development and Training

Provide evidence of maintaining and developing skills and competencies in chosen
therapies

Attend and complete the Integrative Nursing Training

Contribute to in-house training and development initiatives

Research and Audit:


Participate in relevant data collection research audit and projects


Promote and share relevant research findings to support clinical practice and education


Contribute to the development of systems and processes to assess the views of clients on the quality of services provided




Health and Safety:

 
Take responsibility for personal safety by following health and safety policies


Ensure that equipment is used safely and competently and is cleaned and stored correctly
and that any faults or defects are reported


Maintain hand hygiene and infection control practices including bloodborne pathogens standard precautions and transmission precautions.


Professional Conduct:

Maintain high standards of professional and personal conduct that reflects to the values at The Miriam Hospital 


Work constructively and collaboratively with hospital staff to enhance the patient

experience and the care provided 

 

 

Other information:

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

Basic Knowledge:

Active Rhode Island Registered Nurse License.

 

Reiki I certification. Higher levels with experience preferred.

 

Understanding and ability to articulate the principles of integrative nursing and behavioral indicators

Trained in the complementary therapies below or willingness to be trained

Guided Imagery

Guided Breathing Techniques

Shoulder back scalp hand and foot massage.


Meditation

 

Other (therapies as added to the program)

Certification as a Holistic Nurse (preferred) 

EXPERIENCE:

Substantial post qualification experience of working with patients as a complementary nurse

Able to demonstrate continuing professional development

Experience within a healthcare environment

Palliative care experience

Experience working with population affected by dementia

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Prolonged standing and walking.

Exposed to all patient elements.

May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment. 

Repeated bending squatting stooping.
Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians� offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use of 0safety equipment and protective clothing.

Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day. Subject to electrical and energy hazards. May lift and position patients and lift supplies up to 50 pounds.

 

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Mindfulness of the physical emotional and spiritual needs of patient affected by health conditions. 

Clinical awareness of the contraindications to treatment with complementary therapies.


Ability to modify therapy to patient condition


Excellent interpersonal communication and listening skills


Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team Willingness to develop self and others


Ability to work autonomously to provide complementary therapies


Sensitivity and understanding towards patients


Ability to respond to patients in medical and emotional distress
