Student Nurse Intern PD

Summary:
Under the direction and assistance of the registered nurse assess plan implement and evaluate patient care in collaboration with the medical plan of care to meet the biophysical psychosocial cultural environmental and educational needs of all age groups which may include neonate child adolescent adult and geriatric patients. Apply scientific principles and infection control concepts when implementing the clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provide and/or reinforce patient teaching with patient and family. Perform designated treatments according to policy and procedure.

 

Responsibilities:
Patient Care Activities:

Provides nursing care to patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse

- Identifies patients per hospital policy

- Assists with collection of baseline and ongoing assessment data according to policy & procedure.

- Completes appropriate sections according to policy and procedure of the Patient History and Assessment.

- Reports significant observations to the Registered Nurse.

- Observes patient�s needs and follows through appropriately.

- Collaborates with the RN to establish priorities in patient care.

- Evaluates patient�s response to the plan of care on a continuous basis.

- Performs hourly rounding

- Considers age specific needs according to scope of services when planning implementing evaluating care.

- Provides and/or reinforces patient teaching.

- Documents according to policy & procedure.



Technical Skills:

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse performs designated clinical skills according to policy & procedure including but not limited to:

- Activities of Daily Living

- Ambulating Patients



Assists with:

- Pap Smear

- Physical Exam

- Preoperative Preparation



Bathing Patient



Post Mortem Care



Foley Catheter Insertion and Care



Discharge of Patient



Enema:

- Fleet

- SSE



Feeding Patient



Hospital approved hot and cold packs



Intravenous Care



Leg Check



Dressings



Perineal Care



Sitz Baths



Skin Preparation - Surgery



Transferring Patients to Wheelchair/Beds/Stretchers



Vital Signs

- TPR

- BP

- Pulse oximetry

- Pain Assessment



Collects specimens per policy and procedure



Demonstrates ability to utilize the following equipment:

- Crash cart- Adult/Pediatrics

- O2 Equipment

- Bed Scale/Scale

- Drainage Bags

- No Lift Equipment

- Alternating Pressure Pad Therapeutic Mattress and Low Air Loss Mattress Overlay

- Electronic Vital Signs Equipment

- Wheelchair

- Stretcher

- Blood Glucose Monitor

- Bariatric Equipment

- EKG

- Sequential Compression Device Pumps



Functions as a patient sitter.



Under the direction of the registered nurse applies restraints and postural supports as identified in policy and procedure.

- Use of restraints as per hospital policy



Completes annual competencies



Demonstrates the responsibilities of the student nurse associate in patient safety initiatives e.g. falls prevention

 

Other information:
Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in an NLN accredited academic program leading to a Degree or Diploma in Nursing with enrollment in a Baccalaureate Degree Program preferred.



Completion of two semesters of clinical practicum.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



Current CPR certification.



Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit stand squat/kneel for 1-3 hours per day walk 3-7 hours per day lift over 50 lbs with good mechanics twist/bend infrequently.



Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work that deviates from neutral position and be able to perform fine motor skills.



Must have accurate near and far vision 20/20 depth perception and discriminate among colors.



Must be able to hear whispers at 20 feet.
