Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Director Respiratory Care coordinates and oversees the work of Respiratory Care Practitioners and Equipment Technicians on an assigned shift or in an assigned specialty. Ensures quality and quantity standards relating to the delivery of respiratory care services are achieved.
Responsibilities:
Oversees the work of subordinates in order to assure that patient�s needs for therapeutic or diagnostic procedures are met and that department equipment and supplies are maintained properly and are available for use.
Prepares department work schedules Assigns work giving particular consideration to patient�s needs reestablishes priorities adjusts schedules and reassigns work as necessary.
- Orients and trains new personnel. Directly observes work evaluates clinical performance and job knowledge of Respiratory Care Practitioners and Equipment Technicians according to departmental criteria and when necessary counsels or disciplines subordinates.
- May recommend changes in status (i.e. promotion) and termination.
- Knowledgeable of union contract language and uses it when necessary.
Provides technical resource assistance with regard to treatments and equipment on assigned patient care units or shift. Spot checks patient charts including clinical data consults radiology and laboratory results to ensure respiratory care services are properly implemented and in accordance with physician orders. May suggest alternatives or modified procedures or reassigns priority based on findings.
Confers with physicians nurses therapists and other members of the patient care team regarding difficult or unusual cases. Interfaces with other hospital departments to resolve any operational concerns arising on assigned shifts or in area of responsibility.
Responds to emergency and �STAT� calls. As necessary assists with evaluation of patients and development of protocols for patient therapy.
Maintains a variety of records for assigned area including quality assurance statistics productivity statistics incident reports staffing supply usage reports etc. Assists personnel with department computer information system.
Initiates changes in Department policies and procedures for assigned area such as those relating to improved patient care or equipment and forwards to Director for approval. Communicates approved policies and procedures to subordinates.
Participates in providing in-service education in respiratory therapy techniques and proper use of related equipment to department and other health care team members. May provide clinical instruction and supervision to respiratory therapy students on assigned shifts. Provides re-certification on some procedure and Mandatory Safety Training to subordinates.
Participates in departmental and hospital meetings and committees as required. Attends in-services conferences and educational programs.
Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate journals books and attending related seminars or conferences.
Performs the duties of Respiratory Care Practitioner when required due to staff shortages or workloads. Provides direct respiratory care to patients throughout the Lifespan with consideration of the aging process human development stages and cultural patterns.
Educates and supports associates in hospital�s Total Quality Improvement initiative. Through appropriate actions supports the hospital mission statement values and vision. Shares Management Commitment Plan with subordinates.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Completion of an Associate Degree AMA Approved Respiratory Therapy program.
Certification required.
Registration preferred.
Bachelor�s Degree in related science or management.
Supervisory skills to direct coordinate and evaluate the work of subordinate professional and technical staff.
Ability to operate all respiratory care equipment and the ability to move such equipment and position patients.
Thorough knowledge of respiratory care tests and treatments for patients of all ages and related hospital and regulatory practices and standards in order to function as a Respiratory Care Practitioner when required.
Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of others.
Interpersonal skills to allay patient anxiety to elicit cooperation of patients and resolve problems relating to respiratory care among members of the patient care team.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
At least two years performing full responsibilities of a Respiratory Care Practitioner including at least six months in a leadership capacity.
Experience in specialty areas preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in a patient care environment with interact with multiple level of hospital personnel.
Exposed to infectious diseases but chance of injury or illness are minimized with adherence to established safety precautions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervisory responsibility for up to 30 FTE�s.
