Summary: Under the general supervision
of the Professional Nurse provides direct patient care to the surgical
patient. Assists the surgical team
with/by positioning patients scrubbing preparing and cleaning instruments and
restocking of supplies. Maintains
patient confidentiality. Fosters patient and family centered care in accordance
with the Lifespan mission vision and
values and the philosophy of nursing at The Miriam Hospital and with consideration
of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural
patterns
Responsibilities: Prepares Scrubs Maintains Checks Demonstrates Accurately Assists Cleans Cleans Keep May Participates Perform other related duties
operating room in a timely manner with all anticipated supplies instruments
and equipment.
on a variety of surgical procedures; anticipates surgeon needs passes
instruments sponges and sutures occasionally assists in suctioning holding
retractors and cutting sutures.
strict aseptic technique and a safe environment for patients and staff.
all equipment and instruments for proper functioning prior to each procedure.
competence in care of specimens; follows procedure for care and handling of
specimens.
performs surgical counts according to policy and procedure; is aware of numbers
and kinds of packs/sponges/instruments etc. in a surgical site. Maintains an
orderly sterile instrument table according to hospital standard to facilitate
efficiency.
in positioning of patients according to department procedure.
and prepares room between cases and after the last case; restocks as needed.
and prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization.
accurate account of medications and solutions used during a procedure.
transport patients to and from the patient units operating room and PACUs.
in hospital/department quality improvement activities.

Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
