Unit Assistant

Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager assists the professional nurse in caring for patients through the performance of activities related to food service transport procurement of equipment and supplies and the maintenance of a clean safe environment and hospitality. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients.

 

Responsibilities:
Maintains cleanliness on unit including in-patient rooms bathrooms and kitchen including wet and dry mop floors strip and clean beds; clean bedside stand and other furniture cleans sinks showers and commodes; cleans other equipment used in caring for the patient. Makes empty beds for patients as assigned or with the assistance of the staff as designated.



Cleans utility and storage areas. Cleans carts portable intravenous (IV) stands pumps and defibrillators. Cleans wraps and delivers items to Central Supply for sterilization. Uses proper technique while cleaning equipment materials etc.



Stocks patient rooms bathrooms and bedside carts with medical/surgical and other supplies.



Maintains order in in-patient’s utility room by arranging items into their proper place restocking shelves and checking dated items to ensure they are usable. Completes forms to reorder items that are depleted. Keeps accurate copies of these orders and communicates with Clinical Manager to develop an appropriate par system waste prevention systems or problems.



Changes suction canisters.



Picks up and delivers supplies such as intravenous (IV) solutions routine supplies medications laboratory specimens medical records and equipment being repaired by Facilities Management using a cart with rollers.



Disposes of linen bags.



Responds to patient call light and immediately delivers the patients’ request to person caring for the patient and gets back to the patient. Delivers mail flowers freshens flowers adjusts beds and responds to other similar requests.



Transports patients and assists in lifting positioning or getting patients out of bed as directed by the professional nurse.



Participates in patient tray services within established time frame including distribution picking up stripping and sending down trayveyor after service.



Assists patients with menus and meals; sets patients up for meals provides water and nourishment to patient as allowed; feeds patients under the direction of the professional nurse.



Documents simple intake and records calorie counts on the flow sheet.



Checks equipment on unit safety check stickers on electrical equipment and reports malfunctioning to Clinical Manager.



Surveys equipment and materials as directed by Clinical Manager at specified times.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

High school graduate or General Equivalency Diploma.



Read write and speak English.



Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).



Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients visitors physicians and hospital staff of all levels.



Ability to identify cardiopulmonary arrest and initiate CPR.



Mathematical abilities to read interpret and document intake calorie counts and refrigerator temperature logs and order supplies.



Ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situations.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the patients’ life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Preferred



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Exposure to patient environment with associated hazards minimized by adherence to established precautions for safety infection control and department policies and procedures.



Physical ability to lift carry push and deliver moderately heavy supplies and food trays.



Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods while performing job duties.
