Registered Nurse Intrvntl Rad

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager Lead Nurse of Interventional Radiology the Medical Director of IR CT MRI and US and with the support of the Nursing Directors of Adult Patient services provides comprehensive nursing care to patients having procedures in Diagnostic Imaging in accordance with the hospital and department established policies and procedures and the physician�s orders. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.

Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Lifespan and Rhode Island Hospital mission vision and values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical:

Performs assessments and collection of data by interviewing and record review and documents on appropriate nursing assessment forms.

Provides direct patient care.

Prioritizes patient needs and functions as a patient advocate.
Assesses and monitors patient condition throughout the pre peri and post-procedural period (including vital signs invasive pressure monitoring and recognition of EKG changes) and initiates appropriate nursing intervention.

Provides continuity of care for the critically ill patient.

Administers conscious sedation and monitors patients in accordance with hospital and departmental standards for procedures in CT US and VIR.

Administers contrast material.

Recognizes documents and assists in the treatment of contrast reactions.

Intervenes in emergency situations.

Assesses need for and administers other medications as appropriate.

Assists radiologists with procedures and treatments that require professional nursing skills.

Demonstrates skill in using special equipment such as monitors infusion pumps pacemakers defibrillators ventilators O2 equipment etc.

Documents patient status and nursing interventions.

Effectively communicates with radiology nurses physicians technologists and other patient care units and caregivers regarding patient status treatment and outcome.

Demonstrates ability to prioritize nursing responsibility within the department and Pre and Post Procedure Room.

Works in collaboration with the IR technologist to prepare the patient and the room for the procedure.

Takes call according to IR call policy.

Performs role of charge nurse and Pre and Post Procedure Room as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.


Education:

Provides health teaching and procedural information to patients and families.

Participates in staff education on patient care safety infection control etc.

Acts as a resource person for nursing medical and radiology staff.

Assists with the orientation of nurses students technologists and physicians.

Other:

Assists with quality improvement and risk management programs.

Participates in the development and evaluation of policies and procedures in radiology.

Participates in performing documenting and reviewing patient/complication follow-up.

Maintains and enhances professional expertise through appropriate educational opportunities and literature.

Practices cost containment.

Maintains emergency equipment.

Monitors medications including narcotics.

Assists with the development and implementation of research projects.

Participates in hospital nursing and radiology committees.

Collaboration:

 Functions as a member of the radiology team.

Acts as a liaison between radiology and nursing units.

Interacts with other health care professionals to maintain continuity of quality patient care.

Other Information:

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

ACLS & BLS certified.

Demonstrated mature judgment initiative and proficiency in nursing skills.

Able to work without direct supervision.

Is knowledgeable in physical assessment aseptic techniques IV skills and universal precautions.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


EXPERIENCE:

One year of ICU-level critical care OR two years ER nursing experience with at least one year trauma room experience preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some exposure to radiation but hazards minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.

Lifting pulling and positioning patients wearing an eight-to-ten-pound lead apron.

Spends majority of time walking or standing.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within the department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisors where clarification of departmental and hospital policies and procedures may be required.
