Supv Respiratory Care

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Pediatric Pulmonology and following standard policies and performs a variety of diagnostic pulmonary function tests on patients using spirometers gas analyzers oximeters and other equipment to evaluate and test for lung disease. In collaboration with clinical and administrative leaders oversees and coordinates the work of other respiratory therapy practitioners pulmonary function technologists and other clinical support personnel who assist in the delivery of pediatric pulmonary care. 

 

Responsibilities:

Collaborates and supports the health care team in the delivery of quality and fiscally responsible patient focused care as evidenced by providing/directing respiratory care with consideration of the unique developmental and cultural needs of the patient population.

 

Develops department staffing schedule to provide a fiscally sound and safe staffing pattern which meets patient and family needs and expectations. Adjusts schedules and reassigns work as necessary across locations.

 

Facilitates patient scheduling in collaboration with the clinic staff and patient access personnel to ensure the patient is scheduled appropriately and within the designated timeframe.

Performs clinical administrative functions as requested such as managing patient test results including on time documentation of test scanning results assigning to interpreting provider and ensuring the referring provider receives timely results.

Provides technical assistance with regard to treatments equipment and other respiratory related functions within the department. Reviews patient charts as necessary to ensure adherence to high quality standards of care delivery.

Maintains variety of records for department including quality assurance statistics productivity statistics incident reports staffing supply usage equipment needs etc.

Provides leadership in the development of policies procedures standards of care and critical paths to promote positive patient outcomes.

Assists in recruitment procedures as well as serving as the principal trainer of new personnel including clinical support staff as necessary.

Participates in department meetings and recommends patient care objectives standards and goals. Participates in the formation of policy procedures and standards organizational committees and compliance to The Joint Commission (TJC) standards.

Initiates changes in Department policies and procedures for assigned area such as those relating to improved patient care or equipment and forwards to Director and Manager for approval. Communicates approved policies and procedures to subordinates. Facilitates training as necessary.

Explains procedures and gives instructions on various breathing maneuvers to patients to allay fears and obtain accurate results from testing procedures.

Performs a variety of diagnostic testing procedures on patients including but not limited to: routine pulmonary function tests using a spirometer body box and/or gas analyzer to measure flow rates; arterial blood gas draw; peak cough flow; methacholine challenge test; infant stress oximetry and oscillometer; six minute walk test; and other advanced testing procedures within the scope of practitioner license.

Manages verification of and access to of calibration syringes in pulmonary lab and satellite locations.

General Respiratory Care:

  • Obtain Sputum Samples: Perform tracheal aspirates throat swabs and inductions to collect sputum samples.
  • Assist in Clinic Settings: Support Respiratory Care in the VIP CF Pediatric Pulmonology and Asthma/Allergy clinics including conducting yearly evaluations for CF patients.
  • Maintain Inventory: Oversee the Lifespan Home Medical closet and RIC supplies including holding chambers airway clearance devices and medication supplies (e.g. bronchodilators mucolytics hydration provocation agents).
  • Update Educational Materials: Keep educational materials up-to-date and relevant.
  • Assist with Bronchoscopy Procedures: Prepare equipment and assist with procedures in the procedure room OR suite and PICU including sample collection cytological washings and tissue biopsies using a bronchoscope and biopsy brush.
  • Manage Equipment and Supplies: Retrieve equipment and supplies from various departments maintain a clean storage area and ensure scopes are cleaned and disinfected. Keep the bronchoscope travel bag stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Order Supplies: Procure bronchoscopy supplies such as forceps and cytology brushes as well as materials for transporting biopsies or cytology washings and any additional equipment required for procedures (e.g. scissors clamps).

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Other information:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Must have current licensure to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioners in the State of Rhode Island. Bachelor�s Degree preferred or completion of an AMA approved Associate Degree Respiratory Therapy program..

Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience with demonstrated clinical and leadership skills. Maintains mandatory skills; remains current in practice and technology. Is an active member of the AARC and maintains active BLS.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory responsibility for up to 10 FTEs
