Assistant Clinical Manager Rehab Services

Summary:
Reports to the Director or Clinical Manager of Rehabilitation Services. Coordinates oversees and develops inpatient and/or outpatient service to ensure quality and timely provision of care to patients. Provides direct patient care serves as a resource person and assists the Director or Clinical Manager in administrative tasks. Assists with recruitment hiring orientation and assessment of professional and support staff.

 

Responsibilities:

Communication
Demonstrates the highest level of communication and professionalism with patients caregivers rehabilitation staff physicians and other health care professionals both within the academic medical center and in the community. Communication exhibited by the Assistant Clinical Manager includes:
Maintaining effective communication with all team members to implement excellent patient care
Responding promptly positively and respectfully to co-workers patients and families
Displaying open and welcoming attitude toward co-workers patients and families

Clinical Responsibilities
The Assistant Clinical Manager applies advanced clinical knowledge and skills to ensure rehabilitation services are of the highest level and consistent with current evidence and best clinical practice standards.

Program/Service Specific Operational Support:
Thorough knowledge of referral process and triage to effectively organize patient care schedules assign staff caseload and delegate responsibilities based on service needs and resources
Provides direct clinical supervision to staff and students in area of expertise and/or directs staff to qualified and competent individuals in other areas
Approves and/or makes recommendations regarding vacations and other scheduled time off requests per clinical manager direction
Assists in coordinating the orientation of new staff members and evaluation of clinical competency
Assigns or re-assigns duties during staff absences to assure complete and uninterrupted delivery of therapy services
Assists the manager in the preparation of performance appraisals and/or conducts performance appraisals per clinical manager direction
Prepares for and actively participate in staff meetings
Attends scheduled meetings with the department manager and/or director for discussion planning and/or problem-solving
Assists in planning implementing and evaluating department goals and programs
Regularly provides the clinical therapeutic services of a therapist including evaluations of patients formulation of treatment plans administering treatments and discharge planning.

Quality Improvement:
The Assistant Clinical Manager will develop and maintain quality improvement processes to ensure patient safety quality of patient care and patient satisfaction in addition to other measures. Specific quality improvement efforts will include:
Demonstrating full knowledge of current Rehabilitation Services and department policies and procedures; and assist in the monitoring of staff adherence to same
Coordinating in-service and education programs including maintenance of education records and mandatory learning
Monitoring clinical outcomes and consulting individually with therapists to assure quality care
Maintaining and further developing clinical references and resources for self-learning
Facilitating and directing learning opportunities based on identified staff/department need
Coordinating expert review and application of new evidence into current practice
Coordinating and developing rehabilitation policies and/or procedures based on current evidence or research relevant to clinical practice department or hospital requirements
Participating in department quality assurance processes to include reviewing staff documentation for quality timeliness and adherence to department policy
Recommending quality assurance indicators as appropriate

Clinical Education:
Serving as a resource for first time clinical instructors
Assisting clinical instructors with the assignment of projects and patient care responsibilities that are consistent with the needs and priorities of the department

Other Duties:
The clinical coordinator will also:
Maintain membership in a professional association
Participate in national state and/or local committees related to professional and/or clinical specialty area
Participate in professional presentations/activities within the hospital and/or in the community
Assist leadership in emergency situations

Overall performance will be measured by the Clinical Manager based on goals established in annual Manager Performance Recognition Summary (MPRS).

Professional Standard
In addition to adhering to the professional standards described in the Staff Therapist and Senior Staff Therapist job descriptions the Assistant Clinical Manager will:
Demonstrates ability to prioritize and make sound decisions in daily operational issues and challenges
Seek support and follow appropriate channels to address complex communication needs
Identify situations in which ethical questions are present and follow up with appropriate leadership
Provide and accept feedback in a respectful and mature manner
Model behavior and assist staff in understanding appropriate personal/professional boundaries
Adapt to change and demonstrate leadership to encourage same with staff

 

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate of an approved School in Physical Therapy Occupational Therapy Speech Language Pathology or Audiology
Master or Doctorate level degree required
Licensed to practice in the State of Rhode Island
Thorough knowledge of theory and techniques of therapy evaluation and treatment
Computer skills
Supervisory ability to coordinate schedule and evaluate the work of clinical support staff students
Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with all levels of the hospital organization patients families members of the health care team staff and outside agencies
Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process

EXPERIENCE:

Eight years as a Physical Therapist Occupational Therapist Speech Language Pathologist or Audiologist with a thorough knowledge of theory and techniques of therapy evaluation and treatment.
Two years of supervisory experience including student supervision.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory Responsibilities for up to 20 FTEs.
