Cardiac Rehab RN PD

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Manager Cardiac Rehabilitation/Non-Invasive Cardiology and the Medical Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program evaluates provides physical assessment and performs all other duties pertaining to an exercise prescription for cardiac patients within the Academic Medical Center. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients.

 

Responsibilities:

Performs comprehensive evaluation and physical assessment of new patients obtains patient history pertinent diagnostic data and risk factor information from the medical records. Reviews assessments made by exercise physiologist when goal planning and ongoing assessment.



Prescribes exercise for patients in Phases I through IV of the cardiac rehabilitation process. Reviews patient responses to exercise prescription with cardiac rehab exercise physiologist to ensure appropriateness of each prescription. These diverse patient populations would include post-myocardial infarction post coronary angioplasty angina patients on medical management diatetes and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Modifies exercise prescriptions when changes in medical status medications or environmental conditions occur.



Conducts supervised exercise sessions for patients. Conducts patient education classes that include ongoing revision and evaluation of materials.



Evaluates hemodynamic electrocardiographic and symptomatic response to exercise and assesses appropriateness of responses to the prescribed exercise intensity.



Assesses psychosocial adjustment to illness including depression returns to work family adjustments or any significant social dysfunctions that may affect a full rehabilitation. Makes referral to or works with other agencies on patient�s behalf.



Follows routine standing orders which include the initiation of Advanced Cardiac Life Support procedures.



Receives and transcribes physician�s orders. Maintains correspondence with referring physicians. Notifies referring physicians of any untoward events.



Intervenes when necessary and appropriate in situations requiring nursing assessment and/or intervention.



Initiates emergency procedures per protocols. Responds to all emergencies during the program hours and prepares the patient for transport to the next level of care.



Prioritizes patient care and assists exercise physiologists in their roles in order to appropriately prioritize their care. Assists co-workers in the interpretation and significance of any electrocardiograph or physiological changes that the patient may be experiencing.



Serves as a resource for the other professionals who work closely with the Cardiac Rehabilitation population. Provides in-service training to professionals interested in cardiac rehabilitation and exercise physiology.



May assist manager in the functional supervision and instruction of students and volunteers.



Participates in projects that promote the growth and development of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.



Assists with maintenance of emergency supplies and crash cart.



Assists with establishing and maintaining current referral patterns.



Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives.



Performs charge duties as required. Performs other related duties as required.



Performs all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of the geriatric adult and adolescent patient. Fosters patient and family centered care and healthcare services in accordance with the Lifespan and The Miriam Hospital�s mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

 

Other information:

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:



Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.



Conforms to the Code of Professional Nurses. Understands the provisions of the Nurse Practice Act of the state of Rhode Island. Responsible for maintaining a current knowledge of contemporary professional nursing practice within the legal framework of the Nurse Practice Act.



Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise prescription required. Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology with a cardiopulmonary specialization preferred. Experience should include EKG and rhythm strip interpretation. Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise prescription preferred.



American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist certification preferred. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required; may obtain within six months of appointment.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



EXPERIENCE:


Six months of Cardiology experience required. Six months of experience in Cardiac Rehabilitation preferred.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians� offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized or nullified by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.



Prolonged sitting standing and walking. May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment. Repeated bending squatting stooping.




SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:


May be assigned technical supervisory responsibility for up to eight FTEs. Supervision limited to assigning work scheduling providing technical oversight training guidance and counsel. May provides input for performance evaluations
