Master Mechanic

Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor repairs and performs routine maintenance to hospital machinery and equipment such as patient stretchers wheel chairs wheeled carts and equipment laundry equipment motor vehicles and power operated doors.  Repairs and fabricates machinery and equipment parts.  Performs a variety of duties to temporarily replace or assist trades and craft personnel in maintenance repair and construction work; monitor physical plant and perform maintenance functions alone on evening night and weekend shifts and perform duties relating to tool and materials management as assigned.  Is part of the snow team; removes snow using a shovel snow blower snow plow and small engine powered pushers and loaders.

 

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Observes mechanical devices such as pumps motors systems equipment etc. in operation to determine cause of trouble.

Coordinates time of repair with affected personnel and requisitions materials needed.

Repairs malfunctioning equipment or machinery by; dismantling devices to gain access to and removing and replacing defective parts and adjusting parts of devices and control instruments.  Installing special functional and structural parts or modifications.  Tests performance after repair is completed. 

Welds brazes solders; burns and operates hand and powered tools.  Operates sheet metal shear and lathe.

Performs electronic repairs by troubleshooting control circuits on personnel/object sensors at power operated doors etc. ensuring compliance with TJC regulations as well as local safety codes.

Repairs or fabricates machinery and equipment parts using metalworking tools duplicates or designs parts based on need use size and frequency of use.

Performs inspections routine maintenance major and minor repairs on all laundry machinery automatic doors throughout the complex wheelchairs stretcher tables carts of all types and sizes vehicles ground equipment and snow plow equipment.  Assembles cleans inspects tests mechanical and electrical repairs in stretcher shop garage and also out in the field.  Perform a variety of trade tasks temporarily replacing or assisting carpenters electricians plumbers plasterers and other trade personnel.

Monitor physical plant and perform maintenance while alone on evening night weekend and holiday shifts.  Maintain the capacity of recognizing problems and of operating the mechanical 
and building systems and maintain the knowledge and capability to perform all departmental standard operating procedures.  Independently evaluate problems and either correct them or initiate appropriate action to correct them.

Perform clean up duties on work sites; replace light bulbs and patient call cords; move materials furniture and equipment; free clogged toilets and sinks by non-powered means; remove snow; change filters; service vacuum oxygen air and nitrous oxide patient outlets; lay floor tiles; paint and perform a variety of other duties as required by work order emergency calls or direct assignment.

Answer telephone calls prepare work request forms log request and track time required to perform jobs (person hours) for quality and productivity tracking.

Maintain inventory of frequently used materials and equipment (tools) and issues same to workers upon request and presentation of request tag.

Prepare purchase orders for materials required to perform a task for supervisor�s signature.

Maintain established hospital/department policies procedures objectives quality assurance safety environmental and infection control.

Perform other related duties as required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Analytical ability to plan schedule and coordinate work projects.

Basic computer skills with ability to navigate the Microsoft Office Suite of programs the internet and maintenance management software.


BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Equivalent to completion of four years of high school plus 1-2 years of trade schooling with courses in welding basic electricity and mechanics.

Ability to read and understand blueprints design parts to be fabricated and to investigate cause and resolve equipment malfunctioning.

Demonstrated knowledge of standard maintenance and metal working tools electronic diagnostic tools (i.e. digital and analog multi-meter) their proper use and care. Familiar with trade requirements of carpenters electricians plumbers plasterers and other trade skills.  Knowledge of hand and power tool operation and repair.

Must have a good driving record meet and maintain the appropriate and valid driver�s licenses in order to operate motor vehicles as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and in accordance with Lifespan�s Fleet Risk Control Policy. 


EXPERIENCE:

Three years related experience in mechanical repair and general renovation and maintenance work.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Will work throughout the hospital including but not limited to patient rooms treatment areas common areas labs hazardous material storage areas and rooftops where safety of patients and visitors must be considered.  May work at off-site locations in equipment rooms and in restricted spaces.  May be exposed to extreme cold or high heat conditions dust dirt synthetic oils cleaning materials and aerosols.  Observing strict safety precautions and careful monitoring of exposure minimizes potential safety hazards.  Prolonged standing walking bending occasional pushing pulling and lifting. Ability to climb ladders. Respirator fitness test required for OSHA personnel protection standards.  



INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Duties are generally proceduralized allowing incumbent to perform independently with intermittent or little close supervision in conformance with written instructions established schedules and predetermined priorities.  Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.
