Lead Phlebotomist

Summary:
Coordinates assigns and leads the activities of Phlebotomy personnel. Maintain clinical and administrative standards for the operations of the Outpatient Laboratory section. Regularly performs duties and responsibilities of the Lead Phlebotomist.

Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

Organizes coordinates and leads the work of the Outpatient Laboratory & Processing staff to ensure that departmental objectives are accomplished according to established work standards.

Instructs staff in proper work methods techniques use and care of equipment safe working practices and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Monitors staff performance and provides basic reinforcement or coaching as needed. Reports areas of concern to Pathology Manager.

Identifies staff learning needs assists with development of and participates in required education programs.

Provides for clinical experience for students.

Assists with the development of four week schedule to include weekend and holiday rotation. Monitors and reports time worked by department personnel to ensure accurate payroll preparation.

Adjusts staff assignments for unscheduled staff absences or special needs.

Assists with communication of relevant information to staff on a timely basis and in an appropriate manner including participation in staff meetings.

Leads and motivates employees to peak team performance by serving as a role model and resource.

Ensures that adequate supplies and instruments are available.

Reports to Pathology Manager on daily activities progress and problems.

Reports all services and facilities that require corrections to the appropriate person. Consults with manager regarding unusual and difficult technical or personnel problems.

Provides input into development and revision of Outpatient Laboratory policies and procedures.

Provides input to Pathology Manager for staff performance evaluations. Conducts staff competency assessments.

Recommends and participates in appropriate level of corrective action when warranted.

Participates in employment interview process; recommends selection of new personnel.

Monitors and accurately reports time worked by staff.

Conducts training or phlebotomy procedures to nurses aides and new laboratory employees.

Prints and distributes required hard copy reports to physicians and nursing areas.

Notifies physician or other health care provider of unusual delays in testing capability.

Informs appropriate health care provider of unusual test results on discovery.

PHLEBOTOMY FUNCTIONS

Maintains a clear and complete phlebotomy tray.

Introduces self to patient and verifies patient identification.

Age specific � Assesses mode of site and blood collection venipuncture or capillary based on age and condition of patients.

Prepares venipuncture site appropriately performs blood collection and renders post-venipuncture care.

Uses language and technique appropriate to age group.

Disposes of venipuncture material in a manner that provides a safe environment of patients visitors and employees.

Correctly labels all collected specimens.

LIS COMPUTER FUNCTIONS

Demonstrates ability to enter/edit patient requisitions.

Demonstrates ability to enter/edit patient test orders and diagnostic codes.

Demonstrates ability to process ABNs.

Implements �Specimen Received� procedure in LIS and routes specimen to laboratory for testing.

SAFETY FUNCTIONS

Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing i.e. gowns goggles/face-shield gloves and pipetting devices.

Practices aseptic technique and infection control procedures

Stores flammables as appropriate.

Adheres to reagent and chemical cautionary label instructions or refers to SDS sheets.

Maintains a clean and safe environment through appropriate work area decontamination and specimen disposal



Communicates unusual patient condition or specimen suitability or other related concerns with the technical staff of laboratory.



 

Other information:
Qualifications:. High School Diploma or GED. General office skills including proficiency with computer operations. Minimum of 2-3 years phlebotomy experience with demonstrated leadership skills. Phlebotomy certification preferred.



Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit stand and walk 1-3 hours per day with infrequent twisting and bending and lift 10-35 lbs with good body mechanics. Must be able to use either hand/wrist and perform work with slight deviation and frequent fine motor skills. Accurate near vision at 20/40 minimal far vision and moderate depth perception. Discriminate among red- green and blue-violet.
