Medical Legal Coordinator

Summary:
Coordinates and organizes the release of confidential health care record information in accordance with Federal and State statutes Hospital policy and professional practice standards.  Collaborates with Risk Manager to ensure that potentially litigious records are identified and maintained in accordance with policies and procedures.  Assists in development and maintenance of Department Release of Information Manual.  Provides coverage for Secretary/Correspondence Coordinator when needed.

Demonstrates understanding of Hospital JCAHO Medicare and HIPAA. requirements as they relate to confidentiality and release of medical record information.

Demonstrates a knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of medical record content sufficient to accurately locate and interpret required information.

Demonstrates complete working knowledge of SoftMed release of information system.

Demonstrates ability to list requirements for release of information consent.

Receives and responds to requests for medical information from physicians patients State and Federal agencies and others in accordance with policies procedures and Federal and State laws.

Able to communicate rules and regulations governing release of information and give examples of situations requiring/not requiring patient consent prior to information release.

Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively express ideas clearly and work closely with peers medical staff patients third party requestors and others.
Represents Newport Hospital as required at depositions and in court cases involving subpoenas duces tecum.

Develops and maintains policies and procedures relating to confidentiality of medical records and release of information reflecting current standards of practice rules and regulations.

Coordinates and oversees Release of Information activities.

Demonstrates knowledge of fee structure for provision of medical record copies certification of records and other services.

Serves as a Notary Public.

Logs all requests received in the LifeChart Release of Information module and completes logging procedure prior to releasing records.

Determines status of record requests utilizing the LifeChart system.

Demonstrates ability to locate and pull a medical record.

Demonstrates ability to locate medical record numbers or patient names in the LifeChart system.

Utilizing LifeChart opens Chart Correction tickets and follows up with patients and providers as needed.

Maintains current reference materials and reviews professional journals and other publications to ensure up-to-date knowledge.

 

Other information:

High school diploma or equivalent. 


Paralegal or legal secretarial experience.

 

Administrative support experience in a hospital Health Information Management Department Risk Management Department or Quality Assessment Department preferred. 


Knowledge of medical terminology. 


Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
