Network Engineer

Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Network Services responsible for the design engineering and performance management of all enterprise-wide Networks within Lifespan. This position also provides support for all Lifespan IS and Network Services projects to assure a high value widely accessible comprehensive integrated information network which meets customer needs. The position requires team participation in the development and control of all Lifespan data/voice/video communications infrastructure to provide high availability in Lifespan�s local area wide area and extranet networks.

 

Responsibilities:
Engineer the design of enterprise-wide Network systems to provide optimized applications and communications performance transport and availability across the Lifespan local area wide area and extranet network locations.



Evaluates configures installs and maintains enterprise-wide Network routers switches firewall and VPN appliances and performance management/monitoring hardware software and systems.



Coordinates and documents WAN LAN and server farm data/voice communications change management.



Maintains and archives all appropriate configuration data for enterprise-wide routers switches servers patch management communications appliances circuit identification and Sonet ring configuration.



Performs network monitoring and network capacity planning on all enterprise-wide Wide Area/Local Area networks and Server Farms.



Ensures high availability through redundancy and failover implementation at the server and switch level and routing priority implementation at the core and WAN levels.



Researches and recommends new network technologies and upgrades to existing technologies to support business needs.



Acts as a resource for IS department system vendors business partners and other personnel with problem identification and resolution in all enterprise-wide network technologies. This includes packet-level analysis and application-specific traces.



Provides backup support as escalation point for issues reported by Network Services personnel.



Assists in determining the needs structure staffing and systems required to deliver world class Network voice/data/video communications capabilities to all Lifespan affiliates.



Provides support for vendor system installations on file servers to ensure compliance with Lifespan standards and security procedures. Escalates any potential violations of standards or security requirements to management.



Promotes cost-saving �green� data center technologies by investigating and implementing all opportunities for virtualization of server resources.



Provides support for all IS strategic and tactical projects where network support is required.



Recommends develops and implements policies and procedures and acts as liaison with Physician Practice extranet organizations RHIO and business partners with regard to the effective operation of network data/voice communications systems. Works with stakeholders to analyze needs consider alternatives and develops cost effective solutions.



Establishes benchmark criteria and reporting on day to day monitoring and utilization of all enterprise-wide Wide Area and Local Area network services equipment. Recommends and implements actions necessary to meet the service level requirements of the organization.



Develops and deploys preventative maintenance schedules disaster recovery techniques and system upgrades for all network services devices including routers switches servers fiber and all other network equipment.



Develops and maintains adequate inventories and supplies of network enterprise-wide WAN/LAN/server equipment.



Maintains up-to-date technical knowledge by attending seminars vendor presentations and reading professional literature.



Participates in councils quality improvement teams and other such committees as required.



Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies procedures and objectives.



Provides upper management with the following as required: new technology demonstrations and education; feasibility studies; affiliate needs and requirements; project plans; implementation strategies; budgetary and cost analysis; task preparedness; progress reports; documented customer feedback; and quarterly Network Services review.



Maintains and monitors monthly control logs and systems on categories of cost usage and productivity.



Facilitates all on-site Repair and Maintenance.



Coordinates all outside Repair and Maintenance.



Participates in all departmental goal and strategy development.



Provides assistance in negotiation and management of contracts with outside vendors.



Involvement in Demonstrations/Presentations and Benchmarks.



Performs other related duties as required.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Equivalent to a Bachelor�s degree in Computer Science Electrical Engineering IS or related field preferred. Current certification in Microsoft (MCSE) Cisco (CCNP) WMware (VCP) and other relevant technologies a plus. Must have extensive knowledge in at least 4 of the following focus areas:



- File server hardware operating system and virtualization technologies including high availability

- Switching and routing hardware and software as well as embedded security/performance intelligence

- Wide-area network protocols including advanced secure high availability network design

- Firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) technologies

- Network topology design performance and troubleshooting expertise including packet analysis

- Unified Communications at the server switching and routing levels providing optimized performance and security for voice/data/video transport

- Wireless networking including LAN dual mode and outdoor point to point wireless implementations

- Network directory services including high availability design replication and schema optimization to serve business needs

- Network disaster recovery/satellite communications experience

- TCP/IP including IPv6 Ethernet



All candidates must have:

- Project management experience

- Excellent communication and presentation skills

- Ability to design technical solutions to meet business needs



EXPERIENCE:

Five years increasingly responsible related work experience in network systems analysis/design including at least two years of related engineering experience in a similar environment.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in a typical office environment.
