Recreation Therapist

Summary:
The Recreational Therapist is responsible to the Clinical Manager. Develops and plans recreational/educational programs and services for adult and geriatric psychiatric patients on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. Assist in planning organizing and directing therapeutic and recreation programs to effect improvement in psychiatric patients Provides evaluations and treatment for psychiatric patients as described in department policies.

 

Responsibilities:
Actively participates in the treatment planning process by completing selected areas on the assessment form and collaborating with the Professional Nurse to develop the initial problem list and treatment plan which will be reviewed on a daily basis.



Communicates individual treatment plans with other members of the multidisciplinary team on a weekly basis and coordinates plan of care with all disciplines.



Implements the treatment plan in accordance with unit policies and procedures and demonstrates the ability to set consistent and supportive therapeutic limits within unit and department standards.



Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients and encourages their participation in recreational and other therapeutic activities.



Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the group room and reporting any safety hazards to supervisor.



Manages aggressive/destructive behavior by providing timely therapeutic interventions. Assists in placing patients in seclusion and/or restraints according to policy and procedures.



Maintains patient confidentiality and respects patient right to privacy



Re-evaluates and updates goals/plan daily in accordance with patient needs.



Organizes and participates in recreational activities. Demonstrates analytical skills and an understanding of psychiatric illnesses and organizes recreational activities to meet psychosocial and intellectual needs of patients.



Consult with nursing personnel medical staff and other members of the health team to assess the recreational needs of patients



To perform responsible professional work in designing organizing and supervising a comprehensive recreation and leisure education program for individuals and groups with psychiatric issues.



Conduct group and individual recreation activities according to patients' needs capabilities and interests; determine and implement necessary precautions in exercising responsibility for the care and safety of patients.



Prepare or coordinate communication with clients and their families through written progress reports and meeting.



Participate in meetings to discuss and evaluate program techniques and content.



Coordinate organize and implement recreation and leisure time activities and specialized events for patients with psychiatric issues.



Ensures patient ability for self-care functioning prior to discharge by providing reentry-learning skills.



Develops and provides educational programs to departmental staff at the request of the supervisor/manager.



Provides appropriate recreational therapy education to family/caregiver.



Looks at all aspects of the patient including past lifestyle support networks and the focus of current treatment to determine activities that complement this focus and have a direct connection to reentry to home and community.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Baccalaureate in therapeutic recreation psychology or in recreation with a concentration in therapeutic recreation or related field.



Certified in therapeutic recreation by National Counsel for Therapeutic Recreation Activities (NCTRA) or currently enrolled in a degree program for Therapeutic Recreation.

Current CPR certification.



Therapeutic recreation programs include courses in assessment treatment and program planning intervention design and evaluation



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



EXPERIENCE:

Two years of experience in the implementation of recreation therapy activities and programs is preferred.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.
