Completion of a Master’s Degree in Human Genetics.

Knowledge of biological sciences necessary to understand, interpret and discuss a wide range of birth defects and medical conditions in the provision of genetic counseling services.

Analytical and numerical skills necessary to evaluate program development, interpret pedigrees, calculate and predict probability of genetic risk factors, and apply simple statistical tests on data.

Interpersonal skills to deal with a wide range of professional and lay people in Hospital and community.

Counseling skills to deal with clients about complicated and often distressing information.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience in genetic counseling and exposure to patients with genetic problems.


Under the general supervision of the Director, Division of Genetics. Coordinates and provides genetic counseling and education services to patients regarding possible risk of birth defects and inherited disorders. Provides pre and post-amniocentesis counseling. Provides for professional and public education of birth defects and services available. Participates in research activities.
