Must have Medical Interpreter Training Program Certificate.
Requires completion of an Associate’s Degree level of education or its equivalent proficiency in English with preference for knowledge of medical terminology.
Requires fluency in foreign languages for assigned area (Portuguese, Spanish, Cambodian and Thai) acquired by three to four years formal training or its equivalent.
Requires a thorough knowledge of English and foreign languages of assigned area (Portuguese, Spanish, Cambodian and Thai) in order to translate in both written and verbal forms.
Requires the interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families in situations that may be difficult and highly emotional for both parties.
Requires a working knowledge of medical terminology in foreign languages of assigned area and English to accurately translate.
Requires ability and judgement to establish priorities for concurrent demands for service.
Requires ability to be precise and accurate with translations and directions to patients on such things as complex treatments, procedures, medications and diets and the ability to convey the importance of the same to patients.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Requires three to six months on-the-job experience.
Under the general direction and following established policies and procedures, provides both oral and written foreign language (Portuguese, Spanish, Cambodian and Thai) interpretation services to patients and employees. Explains Hospital policies and procedures and provides assistance to patients who have language difficulties.
