Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science or related field. Certification by American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences is highly desirable.

Professional level of knowledge in regards to animal health, behavior, anatomy and physiology. Analytical ability to administer proper treatments and insure compliance with health program and approved protocols.

Interpersonal skills, leadership and organizational ability to effectively implement the animal health program and work effectively with principal investigators and animal research staff.

Mathematical ability to use decimals and functions for dilutions and dosages of treatments, and for food and mixed solutions for special diets.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


Six to twelve months of previous related animal care or veterinary assistant experience.

Under general supervision of Supervisor Research OR & Veterinary Services, regularly examines and observes laboratory animals to monitor and ensure health status according to federal regulations. Treats diseased and injured animals. Implements veterinary treatment orders and assists in provision of veterinary services to laboratory animals used in diverse, hospital-based biomedical research program. Provides guidance to researchers and animal care technicians concerning animal handling, immobilization, anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia. Assists in animal surgery and monitors post-surgical animal care. Assists in operating room functions when required. Provides veterinary support for Lifespan animal care sites. Assists supervisor in other supportive activities.
